Classes for Kids
KIDS CLASSES

Most of our classes are family-friendly and kids are welcome. We have added afternoon classes during the middle of the week for afternoon family fun. But sometimes we must set boundaries on the age of the child. Always check with the studio first before bringing a child to any regularly scheduled class.Minors 14 years or younger should have an adult accompany them during the class.
Potter'S WheeL
Let Kids Take the Wheel
When most people think of a pottery-making class, they probably think of an instructor throwing clay onto a potter’s wheel. Wheel throwing is a term used by many professional potters to create their ceramic pieces.
Learning to create your own ceramic pieces is both fun and challenging. Kids learning this skill will learn how to make forms on the wheel. How to work with clay in its different stages and the process of glazing their own piece. MIY offers Potter's Wheel classes ages 10 and up and different levels. We welcome families and friends to come and create with us.
Hand Building
ALL HANDS ON CLAY
Getting to work with clay is truly an hands-on experience for kids. Hand Building with clay is messy, fun, and easier for most kids than the potter's wheel. Kids will get to learn techniques use to build different forms from scratch out of clay. They will be guided by an MIY instructor as they learn how pinching, coiling, and slabing will help them create forms. This is a great class where they can use their imagination and creative skills to make something unique.
They will go through the complete process of creating a ceramic piece.
As with most of our classes, we invite a multi-generational experience where kids can learn alongside their family members as well as learning with other kids. Check out our Schedule to see our kids only classes and regular classes where most ages are welcome to create together.
Mosaics
Creating Piece by Piece
MIY offers Mosaic classes where children learn to piece together a mosaic piece of their liking. Getting to choose a form and then picking out ceramic and glass pieces to complete a mosaic they and you will be proud of. The Mosaic creative process is exciting and fun.
The class is guided by our MIY instructor who will make sure safety rules and guidelines are adhered to while creating. They will also provide guidance to help kids with the creative mosaic process which includes grouting their own piece.
Paint your Own Ceramics
You can Paint your OWn Way
Painting your own ceramic piece is a fun and creative activity for kids. Kids get to choose a ceramic piece and glazing to paint their own pieces. Our MIY instructor will help guide and provide instruction. The kids provide their creativity and in return get a wonderful keepsake of their time at MIY. Pieces are left at the studio for firing and MIY will contact you when it is available for pick up.
This is a great activity for kids of most ages and enjoyed with families and friends. You can look through our schedule to check for Paint your Own Ceramics classes, or you can contact MIY for the availability of studio time for this fun activity.
ART Glass FUsion
ART Of glass
​Glass fusing is one of those classes that will peak the imagination of a child. This two-hour class combines exploration, creativity, and education all in one. The kids will learn about the different kinds of glass and methods to make it. They will be using unique glass pieces made exclusively here at MIY to create their own glass art. Plates, suncatchers, and pendants are some of the projects that are taught in this class. Ages 8 to 10 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

After School Programs
Once a week we offer an after-school program for children ages 8 and up. Each 2-hour session will provide a stimulating and creative atmosphere that will keep the kids captivated. The after-school program runs in 1-month increments, starting at the beginning of each month. Each week the kids are introduced to any one of the following activities, pottery on the wheel, hand building, mosaics, painting on glass or glass fusing
Scouts merit badges @ MIY
Scouts merit badges
We are proud to be able to help Scout troops earn badges on working with clay and understanding its properties. The scouts will have three hours of discussions, and hands-on activities on the potter’s wheel and hand-building. Two badges can be earned during those three hours of fun and learning.
